Peculier Pub New York City

Peculier Pub Review

city

"The Peculiar Pub is always crawling with youthful vitality that, in this circumstance, translates into rowdy binge drinking.
Young worshippers of the bottle cram into wooden booths of clerical origins, on which they carve their crushes' names and their four-lettered words of wisdom. Is this sacrilege? Well, at least they show good faith in the 500 bottled beers and 17 drafts available."

"Peculier is a veritable museum of beer, with two separate menus (one foreign, one domestic) comprising an encyclopedia of the brewing arts. On the walls, you can study the evolution of the aluminum can and deconstruct the semiotics of the neon signs advertising your favorite brands.
But like other museums, the place is swarming with rowdy mobs of students during peak visiting hours (Thursday through Saturday after 9pm). To appreciate the collections in relative peace, drop by earlyish or on weeknights, when the bartenders won't be too harried to explain the precise differences between a bock and a dopplebock." — Jenifer Van Vleck

"College bars have to be high-volume. Kids want to drink, and drink fast!

This is a tribute to those college bars that introduce kids to a lot of high-quality microbrews in lieu of the ever popular Bud or Coors Light.

That is where Tommy and the Peculier Pub come into play. Arguably the oldest "beer bar" in New York City, this place has been introducing microbrews to the general public long before the craze started. About 30 taps or so total, there is always a handful of really nice and seasonal offerings from great breweries.

The atmosphere is great. Low tin ceilings in a subterranean spot make you feel like you're at a house party. My favorite thing, however, is the collection of brewery memorabilia scattered around this place. Ancient cans, bottles, beer labels, and not to mention famous painting replicas done by the owner with different bottlecaps. Unique and interesting stuff. "

"Being in New York and drinking in a bar that serves Boddingtons is quite unnerving, wholly unnecessary and too reminiscent of home. Centrally located and frequently passed on whatever pub-crawl you happen to be doing, the Peculier Pub is spelt Peculier with an 'e', so not peculiar as in odd or bizarre, but Peculier as in a church official in charge of collecting taxes.

Being that the drinking age is 21, fake ID must be in abundance here, as it was like being in a British pub; the close proximity to New York University is evident by the student and underage drinker crowd in this lower-level pub, a few steps down off Bleecker Street on the Greenwich Village/Soho border. Virtually in the centre of the campus, it's regularly busy here, and excessively so at weekends, which means getting served can take a while and queuing to get into the tiny, almost communal, toilets can take forever.

Every bar and pub in New York purports to be the biggest of this, the largest of that or the most well stocked of the other. The Peculier Pub is no different, as it claims to have the most bottled beers in NYC, hundreds of them. But drinking bottled beer here can be a rip-off if you're not careful: unusually for NYC, the tip is included in the price, and the cynical of us would argue that this is to dupe the drunken, unwitting NYU students into tipping twice, although swindling a student is never a bad thing. And yes, the Peculier Pub is well stocked with the other...

As with student pubs throughout the world, the quality and abundance of women is high, with remarkable, beautiful people whichever way you look. The barmaids are top-notch, and when not rushed off their feet at weekends, the bar staff can be knowledgeable about beers, offering a taste of drinks you might enjoy, and advising on what drinks to try next. Although when an near-empty glass is observed by a bar tender, they're asking if you'd like another - before you've had chance to refuse, you may find another beer arriving for you.

This is a perfectly located pub, ideal if you like busy places and an overindulgence of NYU frat-boys. The excellent selection of drinks, and equally stirring assortment of eye-candy, make this a great place to visit."
